  1. Make ready 700 gms of Hilsa fish -.
  2. Take 4 tbsp of Mustard oil -.
  3. It’s 1/4 tsp of Kalongi -.
  4. You need 8-10 of Green chillies -.
  5. It’s 3 tbsp of Yellow mustard seeds -.
  6. Take 1 tbsp of Red mustard seeds -.
  7. Prepare 1 cup of Coconut milk -.
  8. You need 1 tsp of Haldi -.
  9. It’s to taste of Salt.

It is the most popular and costly fish due its aroma and taste. "Hilsa in Mustard Gravy" is authentic Bengali dish, when i tried it in my Kitchen,I found it so easy to cook.The combination of mustard, onion seeds, green chili and mustard oil with hilsa go really great and bring very distinct flavor.The usage of spices are very less.So let it release it's flavor in the mustard gravy.

Hilsa fish in mustard gravy step by step

  1. Marinate the fish pieces with salt and haldi. Keep it aside for 10 min..
  2. Preparing mustard paste : in mixer we make a fine paste of red mustard seeds, Yellow mustard seed, Salt and 4 - 5 green chillies.
  3. Heat mustard oil in a Kadai till the oil changes its colour..
  4. Temper hot oil with kalonji and cook in medium flame till oil comes from the mixture..
  5. Pour mustard paste, haldi, green chillies and 1/2 cup coconut milk to the mixture and boil it in medium flame..
  6. Now add fish pieces slowly to the mixture and cook it on low flame for at least 10 min..
  7. Then add 1 tbsp of raw mustard oil over the gravy and bring it to boil..
  8. Hilda fish is ready to serve with steamed rice.

Enjoy the fish by making this.Now worm the mustard oil and fry onion slice.Hilsa fish is commonly known as 'Ilish maachh' in Bengal.

I used ready made mustard powder for this fish preparation.Rub fish pieces with ¼ Tsp. salt and ½ Tsp. turmeric powder and keep them aside.According to me, Ilish fish is the tastiest fish in the world.It has a unique feature of producing Oil from it while cooking makes it different from other fishes.Ilish Fish is also called as 'Hilsa' fish and is mainly found in Bengali cuisine.
